Smartswitch Makes Waving At Your Phone Normal

Given how Google Now allows users to talk to their devices, the next logical step is to start using hand motions to control things. An application has been released to do exactly this, and is currently being tested on many devices.

Developed by XDA Forum Member ssspeq, the application is called Smartswitch. The premise is that users can wave their hands in front of the proximity sensor and command their phones to perform certain functions. As ssspeq elaborates:

Basically what it does is it makes it possible to launch androids taskswitcher (recent apps) or call another action such as home, back, menu or turn screen off by waving your finger past the proximity sensor. You can also set an action to run when your proximity sensor is covered. With a little practice this really makes multitasking much faster.

For those who don’t mind learning a new smartphone skill, this can be a really awesome tool, especially for those running ICS or Jelly Bean who dearly miss their menu buttons and don’t want to mod their devices to get them back. The application is currently in its late beta stages so there are still a few bugs to squash, including one where Smartswitch doesn’t get root access on first attempt. Additionally, the application has only been found to be working on the following devices:

    - Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000
    - Samsung galaxy s3 i9300 international version
    - Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 P6800
    - Sony Ericsson xperia neo v

So there’s still some testing left, as it may very well support other devices. By all means, feel free to give it a shot.
